1.3 Million Dollar Homeowner Shocked When They Are Theft Victim

Duncan McDonald was shocked to see his beautiful handmade sailboat stolen less than a few days before it’s official Father’s Day weekend launch.

He had spent hours crafting and finishing the family project for over a year. His young children had even named it ‘Saller Doodad’.  It hadn't yet been in the water but a family trip was planned that weekend.

“I’m still a little gutted and I still can’t really believe it,” he told Global News on Friday morning. “It’s definitely hard to process — a year of work to do that and here we are in this situation.”

No one would ever want this to happen to anyone. Yet there is another side to this story.

From a Thieves Eyes

The sailboat was stolen after the chain the trailer was tied to was cut.

In a perfect world no one should ever have to chain down items in their backyard to keep them from being stolen, but that isn’t the world we live in.

Everyone knows homes in Vancouver are worth millions. This translates into thieves thinking people in Vancouver are rich.  The average selling price for a home in Vancouver was 1.3 Million in June 2022. So if a thief steals a boat and trailer from a ‘millionaire’ they don’t feel like they are hurting anyone.

Even if Duncan is a working class school teacher with a young family, the thieves would have no mercy as they feel the victim can afford it.

Use More Than A Chain-Spend At Least 30 Minutes

Every month we speak or hear about dozens of people who are trying to protect their property with chains and locks and they end up being victims like this family was.

Even if the thing stolen wasn’t from a million dollar home, and someone’s family project, it still hurts.

If only Duncan had known it would have taken less than 30 minutes to setup their home security to stop a theft like this. Now that the boat has been stolen, they could spend hundreds of hours on social media and elsewhere trying to get the boat back, and never get a thing.

I got so sick and tired of watching people trying to fix their property losses after they were victims, I created a short quiz to help homeowners assess where there were might be major holes in their security. Go to score.lightcatch.net to see this report. I think you'll find it amazing.

(This post is a little blunt and may seem insensitive to this families loss. In light of their situation being in the news and knowing far too many people will try the same thing, and end up being victims I wanted to help warn people there is a better way.)
