Bonnyville had the highest crime rate in the province with 13.43 crimes per 1,000 residents and 86 property crimes.  Bonnyville also had the 4th highest crime rate in the province in November.

Improvement District No 9 in the Rockies region, was #2 with 9.96 crimes per 1,000 residents and 10 property crimes.

Valleyview was #3 with 6.58 crimes per 1,000 residents and 11 property crimes .

St. Paul was #5 with 5.97 crimes per 1,000 residents and 35 property crimes.  This town also had the 6th highest crime rate in the province in November.

Residents and ratepayers are paying the high costs for these levels of property crime.

Towns With The Highest Crime in December

Bonnyville had the highest crime for all Towns in December.
Valleyview had the second highest crime rate.
St. Paul was 3rd highest
Athabasca was 4th
Slave Lake was 5th
Peace River was 6th.

The high crime rates in these towns highlights that the highest crime rates in the province are in the Eastern Region and the Peace River regions in December 2022.

The Highest Rural Crime In December

Rural crime was closely associated with the hot spots having the highest crime in the province.

Improvement District No 9 was #1 for property crimes per 1,000 residents.  This area is close to some of the highest crime locations in the province the last few months such as Samson Cree Nation which is #2.

Leduc County is next to Edmonton which had 2980 crimes and Leduc which had 97 and was 6th in the province.  Not every rural area next to large cities experiences property crime but when rural areas are targeted the crime rate can quickly spike to very high levels.

Smoky Lake County is between some of the Towns in Eastern Alberta that had the highest crime in the province, such as Bonnyville, St. Paul, Cold Lake, Athabasca and more.

Northern Sunrise County and the MD of Opportunity are very close to Towns with the highest crime rates in the province.  Those two towns are Valleyview at #2 and Peace River #6.

Increase Your Home Safety Level

I found after examining over 10,000 property crimes that most home security leaves property owners isolated and vulnerable.  The regions experiencing high crime highlight how this problem creates long windows of time where criminals operate in an area.

Using a matrix of systems can increase a homeowners safety more than ten times better than just having security cameras.  Crime Blocker stops homeowners from being affected by a high crime rate nearby.

Where These Charts and Data Came From

There are over 300 Municipalities in Alberta counting Villages and Reserves. We gather all the RCMP data, Calgary Police Service Data and Edmonton Police Service data that is publicly available. The goal is to report on the major areas and trends, not every single village.

Of the 300 RCMP reported areas this report covers 124 of the larger ones. The crimes are then compared to the population to get the crimes per 1,000 residents.

This method helps make the easiest comparison between locations. This method is also what the FBI uses to look at crime across America.

Calgary*

Calgary data is only available as recent as October 2022

Data

Independent police services like the Lethbridge Police Service, the Lacombe Police Service, The Medicine Hat Police service do not seem to report the property crime rates publicly.

If there is a way to access data for these and any other police services please let me know.

Due to the difficulties in collecting this data some locations in Alberta may not be included.
