The Three Most Dangerous Cities in Alberta in January

All Cities are not equal in safety.  Some have far less crime than others.  You were almost twice as likely to be robbed in the most dangerous City in Alberta than in one of the safer cities such as Spruce Grove in January.  We base this data on RCMP released crime statistics and make the rate on a per 1,000 resident basis so the size of the City doesn't matter.  Does your City make the list?

The most dangerous City in Alberta in January was Red Deer.

The three most dangerous cities in our study in order were Red Deer, Calgary, and Grande Prairie.

Knowledge is Power

After conducting these studies the last four months, from Oct 2021-Jan 2022, Red Deer and Grande Prairie have consistently been some of the most dangerous places

Why should Red Deer and Grande Prairie residents have to consistently live with high crime rates? Knowing there is a problem is one of the first steps in solving it.

High crime affects people’s well being. It especially hurts the young and vulnerable. High crime also causes insurance rates to increase due to increased claims. Eventually higher taxes are the results of chronically high crime rates, due to unnecessary police resources and clogged court systems.

One of the Safest Places to Live Surrounds One of the Highest Crime Zones?

Although the City of Grande Prairie has been one of the worst places in the province for crime it is surrounded by the County of Grande Prairie, which has been one of the safest regions in the entire province!

Residents in Grande Prairie should not have to live with crime that is consistently about double what people just outside of the City borders live with.

Clearly, if one region can be this safe and it surrounds the high crime region, there should be no excuses why both areas can not have residents enjoying the benefits of a lower crime rate.  The homeowners and business have a right to feeling and living safer.

What is working for the County of Grande Prairie should be put to use for City of Grande Prairie residents.

Red Deer Sees Progress

While the crime rate remains stubbornly high in Red Deer, we do see progress. In January, over 15 stolen vehicles put on Lightcatch were recovered, many of them within hours.

If residents continue to alert one another of suspicious activity, using the groundbreaking free Lightcatch app, it will continue to drive down the crime rate. We’ve seen real change to a regions crime rate happen as soon as 90 days.

Calgary Also Sees Progress

Calgary community groups and residents are also starting to recognize they also have control over their community safety in a much better way using Lightcatch. Hundreds of residents have downloaded the app over the last 90 days and success is starting to build.

Background About the Data

The RCMP should be commended for supplying data within their boundaries quickly.

The Edmonton Police Service has no property crime data available. Residents in Edmonton could be dealing with much more crime than necessary while the police service withholds reporting.

Calgary data is not available for December or January. We used the most recent data available for comparison, which was November.
