A complete list of 160+ cities, towns and rural locations in Alberta and where they ranked is at the end of this post.

Edmonton Region – Higher Crime Rate than Calgary

Once again, the crime rates in places around Edmonton are much higher than the Calgary region.

The places most affected by property crime in this region were Leduc County, Enoch Cree Nation, Stony Plain, Calmar, Leduc and Edmonton.

Calgary Region

Notice the location of the pink line in the Calgary Region chart and compare it to the Edmonton chart for May.  Every chart is on a scale of 0 to 10 for easy comparison.

It is interesting to see how the city of Calgary has the highest crime rate while in Edmonton there are other smaller locations that have an even higher crime rate than the city itself.

Central Alberta

The town of Rimbey had a large increase in crime over the month of May.

This has continued on into June where an excavator was stolen and used to steal an ATM one night as well as three other business report being broken into on the same night.

The six highest crime locations in the Central Alberta region are below.

After Rimbey, Barrhead was second highest, followed by Drayton Valley, Onoway, Westlock and Alberta Beach.

Eastern Alberta

Some Eastern Alberta towns and cities maintain the highest crime rates per capita in the province.

St Paul and Bonnville were at the top of the chart with 10 crimes or more per 1,000 residents.

This was followed by Athabasca, Vermillion, Vegreville and Cold Lake.

A crime map shows these high crime rates do not occur in the rural areas nearly as much.

It seems criminals targeting Bonnyville or Cold Lake don’t have or use vehicles very much as the MD of Bonnyville surrounds both municipalities, yet only had a crime rate of 1.71 per 1,000 residents and not 9.99 or 6.33.

A complete list of many other places in Eastern Alberta and where they ranked versus the province is at the end of this post.

Southern Alberta

Pincher Creek had the highest crime rate in this area of Alberta for the month of May.

This was followed by Fort Macleod, Sikiska 146, Cardston, Flagstaff County and Kneehill County.

Grande Prairie - Peace River Region

Valleyview had the highest crime rate in the region followed by Peace River, High Prairie, Saddle Hills County, Grande Prairie, and Berwyn.

Alberta Rockies

Rural Crime Hot Spots May 2023

Leduc County and the Enoch Cree Nation were first and second for rural crime in May.

This was followed by Lac La Biche County, St. Paul County, Smoky Lake County, and the MD of Opportunity.

From Highest To Lowest - The Most Dangerous Places Across Alberta from #1 to #162

Below are 162 cities, towns and counties ranked from the highest crime to the lowest.

The list shows the ranking in May, then the name of the Municipality, then the crimes per 1,000 residents, and the last number is the total reported crimes.

A 2 beside the name shows a community with less than 1,000 people.  These smaller village, communities and reserves were not used when building the top six crime locations for each reason.

Congratulations to all those who live and work in those communities that experienced zero property crimes in May!

If You Live In A Place With High Crime

The best way to protect your loved ones and your property is to see property crime stopped before it happens.

Instead of using systems that take days or weeks, and that rarely work, Lightcatch technology allows help at lightspeed.

For People.  Free.  Lightcatch.

For Property.  Crime Blocker.  1000%+ Better.

The locations that use Lightcatch the most often to prevent crime have some of the lowest crime rates.  The examples below from the Grande Prairie region are a good example of this.

These results where the County of Grande Prairie maintains a much lower crime rate than other rural, town and city locations nearby have been fairly consistent over the last 18+ months.

Most places across the province do have a lower crime rate in the rural locations but the difference is not as big, especially for a rural location where the nearby crime rates are so high and there is such a large population and amount of industry like the County of Grande Prairie has.

It would take an extreme skeptic to not consider this example a complete success in its impact.

Where These Charts and Data Came From

There are over 300 Municipalities in Alberta counting Villages and Reserves. We gather all the RCMP data, Calgary Police Service Data and Edmonton Police Service data that is publicly available. The goal is to report on the major areas and trends, not every single village.

Of the 300 RCMP reported areas this report covers 163 of the larger ones. The crimes are then compared to the population to get the crimes per 1,000 residents.

This method helps make the easiest comparison between locations. This method is also what the FBI uses to look at crime across America.

Notes About The Data

2- These are communities with a population lower than 1,000. They were not included in the crime ranking charts.

Independent police services like the Lethbridge Police Service, the Lacombe Police Service, and The Medicine Hat Police service do not seem to report the property crime rates publicly and are not included in these rankings.

If there is a way to access data for these and any other police services please put a comment below..

Hythe property crime was included in the County of Grande Prairie's count. Grande Cache property crime was included in the MD of Greenview's count. Grande Centre was included in the Cold Lake data. Wabumum is included in Parkland County's county.

Due to the difficulties in collecting this data some locations in Alberta may not be included.
